Lagos State Government has suspended all activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

This decision by Lagos State Government was announced in a media statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso.

The statement claimed that the state government had since been watching closely events in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the claims and counterclaims over the control of the union were noted with keen interest.

The statement noted that under the present logjam between the unions, the Lagos state chapter and the national body, the Lagos state government viewed the unfolding event as a duty to ensure the safety of lives and properties of all Lagosians and visitors alike.

According to the Information and Strategy Commissioner, the state government saw the urgent need to douse the unnecessary tension generated by the leadership tussle in the NURTW and protect the citizenry from the likely fallout from the situation hence the suspension order.

The statement thus announced, “the Government hereby suspends the activities of NURTW, which must cease to operate in all parks and garages in Lagos State”, immediately.

The statement further said, “government will set up a Committee to immediately take control of the parks and garages. Members of the committee will be key stakeholders in the sector”, it stated

Omotoso explained further that, “the Government’s position is premised on its responsibility to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in all parks and garages in Lagos State”.

This proactive measure is no doubt commendable as it reveals a government that places a very high premium on the safety of lives and properties of the citizenry which are the valued assets the government had sworn to nurture and protect.
