Train Collides with Bus, LASTMA, LASEMA, Fire Service, Heroes of Rescue, Recovery Operations

A Yaba-bound train collided with a Lagos State Government Staff Bus this morning, at the intersection of the Public Works Department, popularly called PWD, at the Ikeja-Oshodi highway
The staff bus which was filled to the brim, with some staff standing, was attempting to cross the intersection to access Ikeja GRA through Adeyinka Adebayo way, onward to the Government Secretariat when it collided with a moving train.
Our correspondent at the scene of the accident reported some casualties on the part of civil servants in the bus while there was no casualty from the train.
All emergency agencies of the Lagos State Government were present and made frantic efforts to remove the bus from the jaws of the train.
While firefighters throughout the duration of the rescue and recovery of equipment involved in the accident, consistently sprayed water for hours as diesel from the bus’s fuel tank continued spilling throughout the rescue operation.
Casualties were rushed to the Ikeja General Hospital for medical attention. Most people with severe injuries were those who ejected THEMSELVES from the bus through the window.
The accident created a traffic snarl which affected the Oshodi-Ikeja highway. Its spillover also caused heavy traffic on most roads in the Ikeja GRA from Adeyinka Adebayo way to the high court and most other parts.
However, due to the time spent disentangling the train’s engine coach from the bus, another train from Alagbado heading for Yaba was made to temporarily halt its trip at Ikeja train station.
As at the time of filing this report, another engine car for the train arrived to replace the damaged one that got mangled in a collision with the bus.
After fixing another engine brought by engineers of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, the train continued its journey while the bus was lifted with heavy-duty equipment from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.
After about two hours of frantic efforts by the entire emergency operatives of the Lagos state government, LASAMBUS, LASTMA, LASEMA, and Fire Service, normalcy was restored only for the traffic snarl that would ease out in not more than 30 minutes.
The professional manner in which the accident was managed throughout the time spent for rescue and recovery, provided eloquent testimony to the popular parlance that LAGOS IS WORKING!!!.
