Conducting eye examination

All persons certified with any class of driver’s license should pay more than the usual attention to their eyes sight by making visits at regular intervals to ophthalmologists to ensure continued optimum functioning of their sights as a means to enhance road safety.

Equally crucial is the annual recertification of drivers licenses which will help drivers make excellent use of the Lagos State Government investment in road signs and signages, and that of the various road rehabilitation and upgrade programs by the state government.

The institute conducted eye examination and visual acuity testing basics on one hundred and ten (110) members of the truck drivers at the onsite training session.

The General Manager, Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, LASDRI, Alhaja Afusat Tiamiyu, gave the charge at the opening session of the mandatory drivers training, (on-site) and Eye Test organized by the Institute for Professional Drivers under the auspices of the Allied Trucks Transporters Association of Nigeria (A.T.T.A.N), Iyana-Ipaja Motor Park.

Alhaja Tiamiyu urged all drivers plying Lagos roads to embrace and familiarize themselves with the various road signs and directions erected to enhance the free flow of traffic by making good use of the various rehabilitated and improved roads by the State Government.

On the importance of good sight to drivers, she reminded participants of the Yoruba dictum, “the eye is the king of the body” and enthused, “Good eye sights are very vital when it comes to driving hence, the need for organizing eye tests for all the truck drivers. It is imperative for drivers not to relent in taking care of their sights as this is necessary for safety on our roads”.

LASDRI GM highlighted those little things that are often overlooked but crucial to road safety as given due regard to the one-way traffic rule and never to undermine the dedicated lane to the Rapid Bus Transit, BRT scheme in Lagos State.

Another seemingly little safety measures often treated with levity but of which she warned participants never to ignore was the use of seat belt.

She also advocated that drivers should at all times take full cognizance of pedestrian crossings because most times it is another life or lives that would be exposed to danger should any driver disregard such road signage.

LASDRI helmsperson reminded the participants that the success of the institute will only be measured by the attitudinal change and conduct exhibited by drivers on Lagos roads hence, enjoined the drivers to put into practice all the knowledge acquired from the Institute’s seasoned instructors.

Alhaja Tiamiyu commended the Truck Drivers for the prompt recertification of their cards and charged them not to relent in their efforts at being better drivers.

She encouraged participants not to keep the experience and knowledge gained at the institute to themselves but to spread the good news far afield to provoke the desire of others to attend so as to ensure the majority of drivers on Lagos roads are holding current and revalidated licenses- trained and certified by LASDRI.
